I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to celebrate one of the most important holidays in September, today—September 20. I’m sure you know what it is, right? No? It’s Chicken Dance Day! Hey, it’s good to learn new things.
Bet your Chicken Dance Day history is sparse, and I know you want to know stuff. Back in 1994, the Crown Prince of Bavaria visited Cincinnati, Ohio and joined in an Oktoberfest party, or die Wiesn to locals. The combination of beer, Schweinebraten, and pretzels of course inspires anyone to dance en masse. As chickens. Okay, maybe that’s only in Cincinnati. Whatever. I don’t judge. This particular celebration on September 20, 1994, included the world’s largest chicken dance—over 40,000 people. Apparently, some royalty aren’t afraid to flap their feathers.
So celebrate and do some dancing. Come on, it’s Friday! Let loose. And if you don’t know how to perform, you can learn. You’ve got choices:

Delightful post! I haven’t done the Chicken Dance in years. Thinking back, the last time I did the dance was in the hallways of my school. While on hall supervision with another teacher, the Chicken Dance played over the P.A. system. We decided to do the dance, much to the chagrin of the students who happened to be in the hall at the time. They shook their heads and moved quickly to their next class. Great way to clear those halls!
I chuckled out loud imagining my teachers doing the Chicken Dance in the hallways and the reactions of the students! It might be a great tool for stage fright–instead of imagining the audience in their underwear, they could be doing the Chicken Dance. Happy Friday, Joanne!
Ok, this may make me drop a few notches in your esteem, but I have never (nor will I unless seriously drunk) done the chicken dance. I’m too afraid someone will document the event. LOL
Hahaha!! I know EXACTLY what you mean! Although, I’ve been known to do the “Elaine dance” from time to time, which is equally glorious.
Well now isn’t that a weird co-inky-dink? I just returned home from a two-week vacation in Florida and on more than one occasion had the opportunity to participate in the chicken dance. Had I known TODAY was the official celebration day, I would have extended the vacay to celebrate in high fashion with the Floridians.
But, alas, I have returned home to California where I shall have to wait for another wedding invite to show off my chicken dance skills. I’m quite the flapper you know and I mean that in the most wholesome way so get your mind out of the gutter.

Sounds like you had a fantabulous vacation if you engaged in the ever-so-popular Chicken Dance. I’ve heard about your legendary boogie skills…maybe you should post a video of a Chicken Dance rather than Irish dancing? Show us novices how to, er, flap properly. Just something to think about. 🙂

It would be an instant sensation, I’d go viral and then I’d have to hire bodyguards to keep the papparazzi (spelling?) away and it would just get messy. The Jansen Schmidt as you know her today would be gone forever, replaced by a chicken dancing fool. I’d be doing the chicken dance like a chicken with her head cut off and nobody, and I mean nobody, wants or needs to see that.
Let’s just leave the chicken dance skills to our imaginations, huh?
